“Homebrewed” versus brand-name cleaning products

The internet is full of advice about homebrewed versus brand-name cleaning products. When considering whether or not making your own cleaning products is right for you, keep the following in mind:

  • Product labeling: Brand-name cleaning products provide important information for consumers, such as directions for use, storage, disposal and how to protect children.  This is not the case with homebrewed cleaning products. Once mixed, users may not remember what ingredients were included, nor will they know if there are any particular safety concerns or handling requirements.
  • Testing / safety: Brand-name products are rigorously tested and meet all federal and state safety regulations.  Homebrewed products are not tested and do not have to meet any requirements.
  • Effectiveness: Brand-name cleaning products are effective and are designed to clean specific surfaces.  Homebrewed cleaning solutions are not tested for performance and could harm valuable possessions and surfaces.

These are just a few issues that consumers should consider when deciding whether to use brand-name or homebrewed cleaners. A more complete comparison of traditional cleaning products versus homemade alternatives can be found at www.aboutcleaningproducts.com.
