Winter watch: simple steps to ensure safe and healthy indoor living

Indoor living took on new meaning during this season of record snowfall, with snow on the ground of all 49 states except Hawaii, as news reports have described.   And while stay-at-home types were happy to nestle in, many were challenged with cabin fever, restless kids, and energy waiting to be unleashed.

Here’s one way to make indoor time more purposeful: brush up on ways to keep your family safe and secure while cooped up from the elements.  Guard against household fires by paying close attention to ignition sources – a fireplace, water heater, or a hot stovetop are a few examples.   Take care not to set down flammable objects such as aerosol cans near or on top of these and other common areas around the house.  Aerosol products are safe when used as directed.  However, aerosols are sealed, pressurized products sometimes containing flammable gas.  Therefore, aerosols should not be stored on or near sources of heat more than 120 degrees F, should not be punctured, and should not be incinerated.

When using aerosols or any household consumer product, follow these three pointers: Always read the label; use the product only for its intended purpose; and follow the manufacturer’s directions on how to properly use, store and dispose of the product.

Another caution: if you run out of a cleaning product and are unable to replenish household supplies due to bad weather, do not attempt to mix your own “alternatives.”  A common mistake is to mix household bleach with ammonia.  That’s a lethal mixture that produces chloramine gas, and can make you sick.  And remember to lock up and store all medicines and household products out of the reach of children, especially in households where there are children age five and under.

So go ahead and enjoy more time by the fireplace, catch up with household chores and experiment with new recipes.  By following these simple precautions, you can ensure that you and your family are safe as you take shelter from the storm.
