CSPA Partners with CPSC in Web-Based Program to Publicize Product Recalls
WASHINGTON, DC (February 17, 2004) – CSPA has joined the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in promoting a new web site devoted exclusively to product recalls.
The web site, www.Recalls.gov , is the result of an unprecedented collaborative effort among CPSC and four other federal regulatory agencies: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard. The site is linked to the home pages of government regulatory agencies responsible for product recalls. Visitors to the site can find details about recalled products and safety information, and may sign up to receive e-mail alerts on recalled products as they become available.
“This new site provides useful information to our member companies that will ultimately benefit the consumer,” said CSPA President Chris Cathcart . CSPA will encourage its 236 member companies to use the site as a communications tool and has provided a link to it from the CSPA.org home page.
CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton noted that www.Recalls.gov was launched as part of his agency's toy safety and toy recall effort. “We want consumers to be aware of all product recalls when they are choosing and purchasing products,” he said.
Conveying recall information in both English and Spanish, the web site will be expanded to include pdf files of posters and other consumer information that can be downloaded by health and safety professionals working with consumer groups that do not have access to the Internet.
The Consumer Specialty Products Association is a non-profit national trade association representing approximately 236 companies engaged in the manufacture, formulation, distribution and sale of hundreds of familiar consumer products. It is organized into seven divisions: Aerosol Products, Air Care, Antimicrobial Products, Cleaning Products, Pest Management Products, Industrial & Automotive Specialty Chemicals, and Polishes & Floor Maintenance Products.
