A Record Year for the U.S. Aerosol Products Industry 52nd Annual CSPA Aerosol Pressurized Products Survey for 2002 Reports Fillings of 3.518 Billion Units—

Washington, DC (May 7, 2003) – The Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) has completed its 52 nd annual Aerosol Pressurized Products Survey of the unit volume of aerosols filled and shipped for domestic use in 2002. The annual survey continues to serve as the primary index for assessing the economic status of the U.S. aerosol products industry.

The 2002 survey estimates overall unit production of 3,518,050,000 aerosols in the United States . This represents a 13.7% increase over the reported and estimated fillings in last year's survey, and is 9.6% higher than 1996, the previous largest year , when 3,210,900,000 units were filled. Filler participation in the survey this year also was the highest ever recorded.

But only part of the significant increase in estimated units filled in the survey between 2001 and 2002 can be attributed to industry growth. A significant proportion of the increase this year is the result of improvements in survey participation and in the procedures used by the Aerosol Products Division Survey Committee to estimate production of non-reporting fillers. The Committee estimates that the actual industry growth in 2002 was approximately 4%.

The 2002 Survey also reports that aerosol containers manufactured and shipped in the U.S. increased 4.3%, with the largest increase experienced by tinplate steel containers. Valve manufacturers reported production increasing 3.2% in 2002 over 2001.

The aerosol filling estimates for 2002 are based on reports from 102 companies with aerosol filling lines, who reported production of 2,916,609,000 tinplate containers filled, 375,146,000 aluminum containers filled, and 45,000 glass containers filled in 2002. These 102 companies filled 93.6% of the estimated total unit volume, making the 2002 survey a very reliable estimate of total production. This is the highest reporting percentage ever recorded for the survey.

The largest categories of products remain personal products, which increased 5.7% in 2002, followed closely by household products, which increased 16.7% compared to 2001 estimated total production. Automotive and industrial products showed a 23.7% increase in fillings, while paints and finishes increased 23.2%. Food products, the fastest growing category in recent years, gained 7.0%. Animal products also increased significantly. Miscellaneous products was the only category to decline in estimated total fillings in 2002.

Among the significant improvements in this year's survey report is a ten-year chart of the reported production of containers and valves manufactured and shipped in the United States . The survey report also includes, as in past years, a ten-year summary of the estimated total fillings of aerosol products in the United States and Puerto Rico .

CSPA's Survey Committee has worked hard to make this year's survey the most accurate possible picture of the industry. Their efforts have succeeded in making the 2002 survey the most complete and accurate survey in many years. CSPA plans to expand the survey in future years to include Canada and Mexico , and thereby cover all of North America .

Copies of the 16-page survey report are available from CSPA for $25.00 (members) or $50.00 (non-members). A limited number of reports from past years are also available upon request. Send check or money orders to the Consumer Specialty Products Association, 900 17th Street N.W., Suite 300 , Washington , DC 20006 , or order copies on CSPA's web site at www.cspa.org .
