Aerosols: The Can-Do Package for a Sustainable Earth

WASHINGTON, DC (April 21, 2009) –  You’ve heard of the proverbial message in a bottle.  Aerosols bring you another kind of message this Earth Day: one of environmental sustainability – all in a little can.

“Because of the way they’re made, aerosols are practical, economical and help keep the environment clean,” said Chris Cathcart, CSPA President.  “Every aerosol is designed to dispense the right amount of product to a specific area, minimizing costly overspray and waste.  And because aerosol cans are hermetically sealed, they have a long shelf life, allowing you to use an aerosol over an extended period without having to throw away unused product.”

When empty, steel aerosols are fully recyclable.  The aerosol industry supports aerosol recycling programs and advises communities that recycling is the best way to dispose of empty aerosol containers.  When disposed of properly in existing recycling programs, aerosol recycling efforts conserve raw materials used to produce aerosol packaging.

Aerosols offer many health benefits that cannot be enjoyed through another product form.

“Thanks to the aerosol delivery system, we have asthma inhalers that work effectively and provide quick relief to asthma sufferers,” Cathcart said.  “And if you scrape your skin, you’ll appreciate the ‘no touch’ delivery system of the aerosol spray to treat the affected area with a sanitary product.”

Aerosols also help improve the quality of indoor environments by eliminating harmful biological contaminants such as mold, insect dander, and others that aggravate asthma.  During flu season, spraying antimicrobial and other cleaning products to clean and disinfect surfaces prevents the spread of germs.

Consumers can be assured they are using an environmentally sustainable package that makes every Earth Day worth celebrating.
