On Eve of Earth Day, CSPA Encourages Consumers to Recycle Aerosol Cans—an Environmentally-Friendly Form of Packaging

WASHINGTON, DC ( April 21, 2008 ) – The Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) is reminding Americans in light of Earth Day tomorrow to do their part and include empty aerosol cans in their recycling efforts.

“With Earth Day 2008 upon us, many companies, communities and consumers will be thinking about how to further reduce their environmental impact, and recycling is a key element to that effort,” said Chris Cathcart, President of CSPA. “Not only are aerosol cans recyclable, but they are an environmentally-friendly form of packaging for consumer specialty products.”

Many people are surprised to learn that aerosol products are also one of the most environmentally compatible forms of packaging.  Aerosol products:

  • reduce waste through their long product shelf life and minimum spillage;
  • provide important safety benefits by being tamper-resistant and tamper-evident; and
  • require no mixing.

An empty aerosol can, especially one made of steel, has a particularly strong after-market use when recycled.

“More than three billion steel aerosol cans are manufactured and sold in the United States annually; this is enough steel to produce 400,000 automobiles,” Cathcart said.

As with all recyclables, individuals should check with their local authorities on whether or not aerosol cans are accepted in their community's recycling program.
