Student from Plano, Texas, Wins CSPA’s 2009 Scholarship
WASHINGTON, DC (May 14, 2009) – Richard Song of Plano, Texas, was named the recipient of the 2009 Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) Murray Glauberman Memorial Scholarship Award.
Observing its 21st anniversary this year, the four-year, $2,000 per year scholarship was created in honor of the late Murray Glauberman, 1986 chairman of CSPA’s Board of Directors. The scholarship is presented annually to a high school senior demonstrating outstanding academic achievement and leadership qualities and whose parent is employed full time by a CSPA member company. Richard is the son of Max Song and Min Xie, an employee of Central Life Sciences, Schaumburg, Illinois.
Richard, who attended Shepton High School, received a combined SAT score of 2370, including a perfect 800 in math. After his sophomore year at Shepton High, he entered the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, part of the University of North Texas in Denton, where he poured his energies into the study of his favorite subjects – math, physics, finance and economics.
Pursuing his fascination with particle and theoretical physics, Richard read extensively on the frontiers of physics research. The summer after his junior year, he participated in material science research, producing a novel procedure to coat microcapsules with a UV protective layer. The paper he wrote on this procedure earned him a place as a semifinalist in the esteemed Siemens Science and Technology Competition. Additionally, Richard learned about the need for detailed math, discovering the similarity between advanced financial equations and physics equations. Excitement about this field led Richard to plan for continued education in math and economics at Rice University.
Richard is a skilled clarinetist and pianist and has won numerous awards in solo and ensemble competition. He also plays soccer, volunteers with the Habitat for Humanity and tutored English at Liu Le He Middle School in Beijing, China.
The CSPA Glauberman Scholarship Committee, headed by former CSPA Chairman Paul Hiznay, judges the scholarship applications.
