WASHINGTON, DC – For the third consecutive year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) a winner of its Safer Choice Partner of the Year award.

The Safer Choice Program, formerly known as the Design for the Environment (DfE) Safer Product Labeling Program, is aimed at incentivizing companies to identify alternative chemistries and chemicals for use in consumer and institutional products through a labeling initiative. Companies may voluntarily submit detailed information about their product ingredients to the EPA for review and subsequently earn the right to use a “Safer Choice” logo on their products. The Safer Choice Program uses specific criteria to determine if a product may display the logo.

“Safer Choice has provided tangible, bottom-line results for both consumers and businesses,” said Steve Caldeira, President and CEO of the Consumer Specialty Products Association. “Our household and institutional product manufacturers have invested significant financial resources to innovate new, cleaner and healthier products to the marketplace, which also translates into new and meaningful jobs for the U.S. economy.”

CSPA member companies that were also named as Safer Choice Partner of the Year include Amway; BASF Corporation; Clean Control Corporation; The Clorox Company; The Dow Chemical Company; GOJO Industries, Inc.; Osprey Biotechnics, Inc.; RB; State Industrial Products; and Stepan Company.

CSPA established its own voluntary consumer product ingredient communications program and worked with EPA as it developed its ingredient communication requirements in the original DfE program. Both the EPA DfE and CSPA voluntary ingredient communication programs were also acknowledged by Walmart as the two recommended guides for ingredient disclosure in its 2014 Policy on Sustainable Chemistry in Consumables. To date, there are now over 500 companies and 2,000 products engaged in the Safer Choice program.

CSPA is one of 33 Safer Choice Partner of the Year award winners announced by the EPA for this year. Partner of the Year award winners represent a wide variety of leadership organizations, such as Fortune 500 companies, small- and medium-sized businesses, state governments, and non-governmental organizations.

The 2017 Safer Choice Partner of the Year Awards will be presented during a public ceremony on May 15 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center at National Harbor, MD.
